Starkey Omega AI

Starkey's newest and most capable hearing aid, and the first with a neural network controlling the microphones themselves rather than just the noise reduction. Three levels.

The difference

A neural network steering the microphones.

Conventional directional microphones follow rules: narrow the beam when it gets noisy, widen it when it goes quiet. Omega AI uses a deep neural network to decide how the microphones behave, moment to moment. It is the main thing Omega AI does that Edge AI could not. Those neural network features are on the 24 only, and on the receiver-in-canal styles only. If you want a custom shell and the neural network, that combination does not exist.

Which Omega AI suits you?

The higher the level, the better it copes with noise and the more finely we can tune it. The gap between levels is bigger here than on most ranges. We recommend a level after your hearing test.

Omega AI 24
The one with the AI

For people regularly in busy restaurants, meetings and groups. The only level with the neural network features, and roughly double the noise reduction of the 20. If noise is your complaint, this is the level that answers it.

  • Neural network steers the microphones
  • Strongest noise handling
  • Translation, transcription and AI assistant

Omega AI 20
A mix of quiet and busy

Keeps the automatic tuning and the full health suite, drops the neural network features. Sensible for a mix of quiet and moderately busy environments.

  • No neural network features
  • Good noise handling
  • Full health features

Omega AI 16
A quieter life

Home, one-to-one, television. Genuinely fine for a quieter life, but it will struggle in sustained background noise, and we would rather say so than sell it on a headline it does not have.

  • No neural network features
  • Light noise handling
  • Full health features

Beyond hearing

The health features.

Genuinely useful, particularly fall detection for anyone living alone. But they are wellness features, not medical devices. They do not replace a proper clinical assessment, and we would not want you buying a hearing aid primarily for them.

Fall alert

Detects a fall and sends an alert with your location to contacts you choose. All three levels.

Balance assessment

A guided balance check developed with Stanford University, plus exercises to work on it. All three levels.

Breathing rate

New to Omega AI and an industry first. Monitors your breathing rate through the hearing aid itself.

Activity tracking

Steps, standing time and exercise, tracked through the My Starkey app. All three levels.

The practical detail

Styles, battery and connectivity.

Styles and battery
Receiver-in-canal or custom

Receiver-in-canal in rechargeable and size 312, a smaller rechargeable micro RIC, and custom in-the-ear, in-the-canal and completely-in-canal. Exceptionally long battery life on the standard rechargeable. IP68 and waterproof to a metre on the rechargeable styles. CROS available. No behind-the-ear in this range.

Connectivity
Bluetooth LE Audio

Google Fast Pair for Android, Made for iPhone, and push-to-talk between two wearers. Telecoil on the two receiver-in-canal styles only. Starkey list an Auracast finder, but broadcast reception was still pending a firmware update at the last check. We will confirm the current position with Starkey before promising it works.

Frequently asked questions.

Conventional hearing aids decide what to amplify using fixed rules. Omega uses a trained model to steer the microphones themselves, deciding moment to moment where to listen rather than just how much to reduce noise. It is a genuinely different approach, and it shows most in difficult rooms.

The full neural processing is in the top level. The lower levels are the same hearing aid with less of that system switched on. We will tell you plainly which you are buying rather than letting the range name do the talking.

Somewhere in between, and we will be honest about it. Step counting and activity tracking work well. Fall detection with alerts to a family member is genuinely valuable for some people living alone. Nobody should buy a hearing aid for the health features alone, but if you would use them, they cost you nothing extra.

Omega is newer and has the neural microphone steering. Edge AI has exceptional battery life and, at its top level, can outperform a middle level of Omega for the same money. We compare them properly against your hearing test rather than simply recommending the newest.
